Everywhere I drove, this car turned heads. People in both trendy Manhattan neighborhoods and back country villages in Connecticut loved this car.</div>

Many thought it was something Italian, like a Ferrari or a Maserati, and more than one person said something to the effect of "I've never seen a Jaguar like that before."</div>

That's the thing about the F-Type Coupe; the form is so spectacular, the function doesn't really matter. This is a car Jaguar could — and probably does — sell on looks alone.</div>

But this car's story doesn't end there. My particular tester was an R model. As such, it comes with a 550-horsepower supercharged 5.0-liter V8 engine, all-wheel drive (AWD) and an 8-speed automatic gearbox. The total cost: A little over $119,000.</div>

The F-Type name is a reference to Jaguar's iconic 1962 E-Type sports car, considered by some the most beautiful car ever built. And its moniker is more than a nod to the past; the F-Type is the British brand's first true sports car since the E-Type.</div>

Its design doesn’t shout to the world about how great it is at first glance, but invites repeated viewings. Each look reveals a new detail that you might have missed before. Its proportions are spot-on as well. It takes the classic sports car formula of long-hood, short-deck and modernizes it. The wheels are pushed way out towards the four corners and the character line rises dramatically at the rear.</div>

Those good looks come at a cost, and that’s interior space and visibility, or rather, the lack thereof.</div>

The sloping rear deck looks amazing, but it creates massive blind spots and leaves you with a tiny rear window that makes driving the F-Type in city traffic very tricky. To partially solve this, drivers can rely on the mirror-mounted blind spot monitoring system, which works well on the highway. It falls flat, however, when sharing the road with crazed Manhattan cyclists and tourists, as they're too small and quick for the system to pick up.</div>

Sitting very low in the car, looking out over a tall cowl (the place where the hood and windshield meet), forward visibility is better than in the rear... but only negligibly so. This is a big problem in the city, but not a huge deal out on the country roads where the F-Type is in its element.</div>

Unless you're a sociopath, driving this car on public roads is an exercise in restraint. That's because the unmatched roar of the exhaust and addictive immediacy of the supercharged V8's acceleration is too tempting not to indulge every few seconds.</div>

The bellowing crackle of the F-Type's exhaust is no accident either. Jaguar <a href="http://articles.sae.org/12441/" style="color: #00aeef; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">engineered</a>the car to let additional fuel in the cylinders when the driver lifts off the throttle, creating what it calls a "controlled misfire." The effect is pops and crackles that sound like gunshots every single time you take your foot off the gas.</div>

Here’s an example of what I mean; you look to pass someone on the highway, click down two gears on the (excellent) 8-speed automatic gearbox and give it a little gas to pass someone like a normal human. Only after 15 seconds or so, you realize you’ve gone from doing the speed limit to a number that would get you a life sentence in less car-friendly and tolerant states like Virginia.</div>

When you stand on the throttle with intention, it launches the car towards the horizon with a weird mix of calm and violence. Calm, in that the AWD system quickly sends power to the front wheels to pull you forward effortlessly. Violent, in that the V8 makes absurd angry noises and speed comes seemingly without friction or air resistance.</div>

To bring the F-Type back to legal speeds, my tester came equipped with optional $12,000 carbon-ceramic brakes designed to not only reduce weight but also reduce brake fade during repeated full-pressure braking scenarios. On public roads, saner drivers will likely never dig deep into the brakes.</div>

From what I experienced, however, they felt very strong and very reliable. While certainly neat to look at, and brag about to your buddies, the carbon ceramics are designed for race-track driving. And if you don't aim to do much of that, they probably overkill, so save your money.</div>

The electric power steering is direct and well-weighted, but it lacks feel, though that can be said about virtually every modern sports car. It’s not points against Jaguar, but rather a reality of the modern era, as automakers switch from hydraulic to electric power assistance.</div>

This is the sort of car you love in spite of itself, or at least I did. It’s too much power and too little interior space, too little visibility to comfortably live with everyday. That said, it plays a critical role in the ever-changing automotive world.</div>

A proposed software fix would be the cheapest option, however, it would slash engine power output and efficiency. Another alternative is retrofitting the vehicles with exhaust treatment systems that could bring emissions to legal levels, however, this could cost roughly $3,000 per car. The last and most costly option, but one that would save most face with customers, would be a buy-back program in which VW would give customers new cars or simply buy the affected model from them.</div>

The statement is the first such proclamation from a carmaker and one that will likely open the door for others to make similar assertions. It should be made clear, however, that Volvo will only assume liability in an accident where the autonomous car is the one that messed up. In most cases, that will be up to the courts. However, autonomous cars will be even more capable of avoiding collisions caused by other vehicles, as they monitor a 360-degree view around themselves and can react more quickly than a human ever could.</div>

Samuelsson worries that if lawmakers don't act swiftly to enact such regulations that the U.S. could lose its position as a leader in autonomous driving technology development.</div>

Think about it: If your car virtually cannot crash, keeping you and your vehicle out of harm's way, your insurance company would never have to shell out medical or auto body repair payments.</div>

Volkswagen recently admitted to cheating emissions testing in many of its four-cylinder diesel cars. The cars were equipped with a "defeat device" that would allow them to pass emissions testing, by detecting when the car was undergoing emissions testing and turning on all of its emission control systems. On the road, the systems would turn off, improving performance and increasing emissions significantly.</div>

Although the car might look like a racier version of the German brand's M4 coupe, little could be further from the truth. Because the car boasts two production car world-firsts: a water-injected engine in the front and organic light emitting diode (OLED) tail lights in the rear.</div>

Let's start up front. BMW engineers have taken their potent 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged inline six-cylinder and, for the first time in a production car, fitted it with water injection. Though the technology has been utilized and proven on the racetrack for many years, this is the first production car to include it. It has many technical benefits. Essentially, injecting water in the cylinder along with a tiny mist of gasoline allows the engine to run at higher rpm than without the water. And, as we learned during dieselgate, higher compression engines not only run more efficiently, they also generate more power.</div>

The result of adding water injection to the M4 motor is a 16% bump in horsepower and a 10% increase in torque, totaling 493 hp and 442 pound-feet. These performance figures will rocket the M4 GTS from 0 to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds on the way to its top speed of 189.5 mph. All that power is routed to the rear wheels through the 7-speed M double-clutch transmission and the active M rear differential. Amazingly, the car is capable of generating all this extra oomph while returning similar fuel efficiency numbers as the 'standard' M4 coupe.</div>

As for the rear-end tech, while not as mighty as the engine, the OLED lights are nonetheless impressive. Compared to LED lights common in high-end cars, OLED are incredibly thin and emit light across the entire surface, rather than from a single point. Not only does this mean the lights are 1.4 mm tall but they can light up modules individually, creating "fresh possibilities ... and distinctive BMW lighting design -– both at night and daylight," according to BMW.</div>

The front and rear aren't the only spots with cool features on the M4 GTS, the middle has some distinguishing characteristics, too. BMW was keen to cut weight on the GTS, so its carved several components from carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP), including the roof, hood, instrument panel, and that massive rear wing. It's also deleted the rear seats and installed a new suspension that is not only lighter weight but also three-way adjustable. The total weight savings result is a curb weight of just 3,494 pounds — 36 pounds lighter than the standard M4. Designers finished the whole thing off with a dark matte paint scheme and added a touch of flare with the BMW M star-spoke wheels with Acid Orange highlights.</div>

If you're hoping to get your hands on a GTS, I have some good news. Though BMW will only be producing 700 examples worldwide, it will be rolling out 300 for the U.S. market first. So you don't have to be wildly lucky to get your hands on one, just well connected. If I were you, I'd start making friends with your BMW dealer now-ish.</div>
